Left to Right: Grungy Jason Todd... At just 20 years old, he has already lived twice. Under the employ of Ra's Al Ghul and then Red Claw, Jason embraced his darkness. That darkness gave Jason his own individual identity...no legacy to carry on, but a whole new persona for his whole new life: Red X.
Jason Todd has had a very rough life. Born to an alcoholic mother and an absentee father who left before he was even a month old, Jason’s childhood was anything but ideal. His mother drank herself to death when Jason was only five years old and he became a ward of the state. Sent to live in the Middlelin Hall Juvenile Detention Center, an abusive state home for orphaned or delinquent boys, directly after, Jason spent the next five years subjected to physical, verbal, and sexual abuse by both his fellow orphans and his proposed guardians. By the time he was ten, Jason had taken to pick-pocketing and hustling (prostituting for men and women...whoever could pay more) on the streets for money.
One day, at age 13, while roaming the alleyways of the East End of Gotham in the dangerous early hours of the morning with a few fellow miscreants, Jason saw the Batmobile unattended and decided to liberate it of its very expensive tires. Before he could unbolt the final bolt, however, the Caped Crusader had descended upon the group and frightened everyone but Jason away. Impressed by the kid’s ballsy attitude, Batman (or rather Bruce) decided to take him under his wing and train him to be his new Robin. At this point, the previous holder of the title had retired that moniker and adopted the new persona of Nightwing, guardian of Blüdhaven.
Bruce Wayne, with his eternally ticking biological clock, adopted Jason... but it wasn't a quick and easy transition. For instance, when in costume, Jason had to wear a black wig to cover his blazing red hair. Bruce was also surprised and a more than a little concerned by Jason's tendencies towards brutality. On more than one occasion, Bruce had to remind him of his 'no kill' clause. Jason bent that rule as far as it could bend without breaking, breaking many criminal bones in the process. Two years, the Dynamic Duo worked together. Then came that one mission...
Jason, who had a penchant for 'hot-dogging', was too busy having fun taking down the bad guys to stop The Joker from clocking him in the back of the head with a crowbar. Jason was kidnapped and tortured by Joker for days in an abandoned cell far beneath the remains of an old, abandoned Arkham Asylum. Jason broke and gave up Batman's true identity. The Joker decided to fashion Jason after himself, referred to him as Joker Jr., and brainwashed him to kill Batman. The plan backfired, however, and Jason attempted to sacrifice himself to destroy Joker, detonating the bomb meant for Batman so that the explosion and following collapse of the remains of Arkham would kill them both. Batman barely managed to escape, but immediately searched the rubble for Jason and the Joker, but he only found the former.
Jason was dead. Bruce, his butler and father-figure Alfred, and Dick Grayson (the former Robin and current Nightwing) had a small funeral for him on the grounds of Wayne Manner. But the entire Bat-Family was about to discover that death, at least for some, is not final.
Ra's Al Ghul had gotten word about what happened to Jason, and being one of the only people on earth to know Bruce's true identity (yet strangely not exploiting it), he felt he owed something to The Detective for what Bruce had done for him and his daughter, Talia.
In the dead of night, whilst Bruce was on patrol and Alfred was otherwise occupied, Ra's sent a recovery team to exhume Jason's body and bring it to him in his secluded mountain base. There, Ra's dunked Jason in the Lazarus Pit, restoring life and health to his broken body... but not sanity. Ra's, realizing this, decided to keep Jason until he mellowed out. That ended up being about four years.
As a result of his exposure to the Lazarus Pit, Jason squired a streak of white through his flaming red hair. At 19, Jason was one of Ra's' assassins as well as Talia's consort - which is all the more interesting since Talia was the mother of Bruce's nine year old son, Damian. Eventually, Jason began feeling rage towards Bruce for his command over Talia's heart.
Jason left Ra's employ at 20 and became a career criminal when he was discovered and employed by the international terrorist mastermind Red Claw, a fierce Russian woman with a frozen heart. While working for her, on a mission to assassinate a particular scientist, Jason happened upon the most amazing battle suit. Powered by a substance called xynothium, the suit had incredible nano-technology which allowed for weapons to almost literally materialize from nowhere for instant use, as well as powerful energy-blasting abilities and a sonic-manipulation program that can mimic any sound. Apparently the suit was part of the Cryo-X super soldier program. Jason took the suit and adopted his own identity: Red X.
Red X is now a free agent. The strangest mix of vigilante, anti-hero, anti-villain, and plain old troll, Red X is out to serve no greater purpose than satisfying his own wants and needs first. Only time will tell what will become of this prodigal son of the House That Bat Built.
